International Organizations

Internships
Types of Internships Available to Canadian Students
- Government (federal): Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) — the main entry point for federal internships/student jobs, open to undergrad and grad students; also check Bank of Canada and Statistics Canada student/co-op streams directly.
- Banking: Big 5 banks run structured summer analyst/intern programs in capital markets, economics, and risk — typically the primary hiring pipeline into full-time analyst roles.
- Consulting: MBB and Big 4 firms run summer associate/intern programs, especially for penultimate-year undergrads and current master's students.
- PhD-specific research internships: Bank of Canada's PhD Internship/Visiting Scholar programs, IMF Fund Internship Program (FIP), and World Bank Internship Program are aimed specifically at PhD students and offer research-focused summer placements.
- University co-op programs: Many Canadian universities (e.g. Waterloo, SFU, UBC, TMU) have formal co-op streams that place students in paid work terms with government, banks, and industry — check your school's co-op office as a first step.
When to Apply
Recruiting timelines run well ahead of the actual work term:
- Banking & consulting summer internships: applications typically open August–October for the following summer — roughly 8–10 months in advance.
- Federal government (FSWEP): applications generally open in the fall for the following spring/summer, with rolling intakes throughout the year for some streams.
- PhD research internships (Bank of Canada, IMF, World Bank): deadlines are usually in the fall or early winter for the following summer.
How to Prepare
- Attend employer info sessions and campus recruiting events — many banks and consulting firms weight attendance and networking (coffee chats) in early screening.
- Tailor your resume and cover letter to the specific internship stream (economics vs. general capital markets vs. risk, for example).
- For consulting: start practicing case interviews early — economic consulting cases differ from strategy-consulting cases (see damages/quantitative framing).
- For banking/finance: brush up on markets knowledge and be ready to discuss recent macroeconomic developments.
- For PhD research internships: have a clear, concise summary of your research agenda and job market paper (even in progress) ready to discuss.
Young Professional Programs
Structured, competitive entry-level programs — many have strict eligibility windows (e.g. years since degree completion, age limits, citizenship requirements), so check details carefully and apply early.
